Martin van Waning was an Artist with a colourfull life. Van Waning studied mechanical engineering in Delft, but devoted himself entirely to painting after completing his studies. He took lessons with artists such as Charles Dankmeijer, Jan van Rhijnnen and Willem de Zwart and attended the art center in Wiesbaden. In Germany he met the Russian Grand Duke Orlov and became his private secretary. Together with Orlov he traveled through France, Italy, Spain and North Africa. In 1917 Van Waning settled in the Netherlands again and first lived in The Hague and from 1925 on the Veluwe. In 1937 he moved to the island of Schiermonnikoog, where he established his studio in the former nautical school. During the Second World War, the studio was bombed and much of its work destroyed. My grandparents knew Martin from 'Schier'.
